What is Happening at Shine

Light It Orange 2018 is 3-9 March.  Join people all around New Zealand to shine a light on domestic violence by going crazy with the colour orange, raising awareness and raising much needed funds to help victims of domestic abuse to get safe and stay safe.

Come and Join ‘Team Shine’ for Ports of Auckland Round the Bays 2018 and make your run count. As part of ‘Light it Orange’ join us on the start line on Sunday 4th March 2018!

Run, jog or walk with your family, friends, or work colleagues along the stunning 8.4km course from Quay Street along the Waitemata harbour to a spectacular finish along St Heliers Bay.

You will help raise awareness of family violence here in NZ, and of course the much needed funds to help victims of family violence get safe and stay safe.

 We hope to raise $10,000 which will support over 1400 calls to Shine’s Helpline for support, advice and safety planning.

By the end of 2017, $48,200 was raised - surpassing our goal of $48,000 - to help children live free from violence and fear. Tina Cross wrote 'Another Little One' - a song inspired by toddler Moko Tangitoheriri’s brutal death, and this song was the centrepiece of Shine's annual Christmas campaign asking that no more children be lost to violence or suffer abuse. 

Tina's single 'Another Little One' can be purchased from iTunes and Spotify and all proceeds are being donated to Shine.

Shine General Manager and former Executive Director Jane Drumm was named a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in 2018 for services to victims of domestic violence. “Ms Jane Drumm has provided support for victims of domestic violence for more than 20 years.”

Holly Carrington, of the group Shine..said McLean's killing of Verity was a selfish act. "It sounds very much like Ben McLean's mentality was 'If I can't have you, no one can' and that in his eyes, her not wanting to be with him meant that she deserved to die. Even worse, Ben McLean's children have to live without their mother for the rest of their lives and they have to live knowing that it was their own father who killed her. It's unconscionable that he didn't think of this until after he killed his wife, or that if he did, that it wasn't enough to stop him."

Rebecca Kendrick, of Pakuranga, has held a variety of local, regional and national leadership roles in GirlGuiding NZ for 12 years, and was elected as the young leader representative to the national board in 2016. She's also an active member of Shine.

A domestic violence service provider has said we need to change our attitudes towards child abuse.

The Coroner's report into the death of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri recommends every child be registered and then monitored up until the age of five.
Shine manager Jill Proudfoot says acting on this advice could help save lives.

Simon and Amy are passionate about exploring this beautiful country and capturing those moments through photography.
